Short answer
You cannot buy a CVV code. The code is not a product. Banks and card networks print it on the card and tie it to one account. Sites and chat channels that advertise CVV numbers sell data copied from cards the sellers do not own. Buying that data is fraud in the United States under 18 U.S.C. 1029.

What the code is
Visa, Mastercard, and Discover print a 3 digit code on the back of the card. American Express prints a 4 digit code on the front. Merchants use the code to check that the buyer holds the physical card at the time of an online order.

PCI DSS requires that this sensitive authentication data not be stored after a transaction is authorized. A merchant that keeps CVV values in a database is out of compliance.

Why CVV listings exist
Card data gets stolen through skimmers on fuel pumps and ATMs, phishing pages that copy a checkout screen, and breaches at merchants. Records then get resold on carding forums, Telegram channels, and dark web markets.
- Prices on those listings run from about $5 to $100 per record. Records with a Social Security number or bank login sell for more.
- Most records fail at checkout. Cardholders and issuers close accounts once fraud is reported.
- No escrow protects the buyer. Sellers take payment in crypto and disappear.
- Buyers who test a stolen number leave an IP address, an account, and a payment trail.
Legal position in the US
18 U.S.C. 1029 covers fraud and related activity with access devices. Penalties reach 10 years in prison and fines for most offenses, and 15 years for some. Possession of 15 or more unauthorized access devices with intent to defraud carries a presumption of intent. State prosecutors add charges for identity theft and computer crimes. Sentences are served in federal prison.
If you need a card you can use online
- Open an account at a bank or credit union. That is the only source of a working CVV.
- Ask the issuer for virtual card numbers. Several US issuers generate a number tied to one merchant. The number and its code expire after use.
- Buy a prepaid card at a grocery store or pharmacy. Register it, then use it online.
- Keep a second card for subscriptions. If one number leaks, you cancel one card.
Parameters to check on your own card
- Digits. Visa, Mastercard, Discover: 3 on the back. American Express: 4 on the front.
- Matching billing address. A correct code with a wrong ZIP code still triggers a decline.
- Card type. Some debit cards block online charges until you enable them in the bank app.
- Expiration date. An expired card fails even with a correct code.
Pitfalls
- Anyone who asks for your CVV by email, text, or chat. No bank and no merchant asks that way.
- Inbound calls that claim to be your bank fraud line. Call the number on the back of the card instead.
- Checkout pages that load from a domain that does not match the store.
- Listings that promise a working code with no card. The code exists only with the card.
- Sellers who ask for a test charge first. The test charge is the fraud.
If your own code is exposed
Call the issuer and ask for a new card with a new number. Review statements for small charges under $5. Report fraud to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov and to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center. A federal case number helps if a merchant disputes the charge.
