Selling CVV numbers is illegal card fraud
There is no legitimate shop that sells CVV numbers. A CVV or CVC is a security code printed on a payment card. Selling, buying, or trading CVV data is carding, and it violates federal law in the United States. This guide does not explain how to sell CVV data. If you encounter a site or message offering to sell CVV numbers in 2024, treat it as a fraud attempt. Do not send money, do not share card data, and report the contact to the Federal Trade Commission and the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.
Why CVV data is sensitive
Merchants use the CVV to verify that the person making an online purchase has the physical card. Payment card industry rules prohibit storing the CVV after authorization. Criminals who obtain CVV numbers try to use them for unauthorized purchases. That is why a real shop never asks you to sell your CVV or buy someone else's.
Protect your CVV during online purchases
- Keep the card in your sight and never read the CVV aloud in public.
- Enter the CVV only on checkout pages that show a valid HTTPS connection and a known merchant name.
- Refuse any request to send a photo of your card or CVV by email, text, or chat.
- Use a virtual card number from your bank when a site does not need the physical card details.
- Review card statements weekly and report unrecognized charges at once.
If someone offers to sell you CVV numbers
Do not engage. Save the message, screenshot the offer, and report it. A legitimate 2024 card security program does not include buying CVV data. If your own CVV was exposed, call the number on the back of your card, ask for a replacement card, and dispute any fraudulent charges. Then change passwords on shopping accounts and enable multi-factor authentication.

What to do if your card is compromised
- Lock the card in your banking app.
- Call the issuer and request a new card and CVV.
- File a report with the FTC's identity theft reporting service and with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.
CVV security is about keeping the code private. Anything that promises to sell CVV numbers on a shop is a crime, not a shortcut.
