What the CVV actually does
The card verification value is the three or four digit code printed on your card. It exists to prove that whoever is typing the card number is holding the physical card. Card networks require merchants to ask for it on most card-not-present transactions. A merchant that never asks for it, or a page that asks for it twice in odd formats, deserves a second look.

Steps to take before you enter your card
- Confirm the site address shows a padlock and the exact domain you expected, including the spelling of the brand name.
- Read the return policy and the seller's physical address on the same site, not on a linked page from a third party.
- Check independent reviews of the merchant for complaints about unauthorized charges.
- Pay with a credit card rather than a debit card or a wire transfer, so you keep dispute rights.
- Type the CVV only into the payment fields of the checkout, never into a chat box or an email reply.
- Decline any request to send a photo of the front and back of your card.
Warning signs at checkout
- The page asks for your PIN, your full social security number, or a photo of your ID alongside the card.
- The price is far below market and the seller pushes you to pay by gift card, crypto transfer, or peer-to-peer app.
- The checkout redirects to a different domain right before the payment step.
- You are asked to install a remote access tool so an agent can help you complete the order.
- The seller offers to store your CVV for future purchases. Reputable processors do not keep it after authorization.
If your card data is exposed
- Call the number on the back of your card and ask for the card to be frozen or replaced.
- Review recent transactions line by line and dispute anything you do not recognize.
- Change the password on the shopping account and turn on two-factor authentication.
- File a report with the Federal Trade Commission at IdentityTheft.gov and, if money was lost, with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.
- Keep the confirmation numbers from every call and report in one folder.
No legitimate seller needs your CVV outside a payment form, and no legitimate marketplace sells card numbers. Treat any offer to buy card data as a crime in progress and report it.
