What a CVV code is

Visa calls it CVV2. Mastercard calls it CVC2. American Express calls it CID and prints 4 digits on the front. For Visa, Mastercard, and Discover the code is 3 digits on the back, next to the signature panel. The code exists to prove the buyer holds the physical card.

CVV1 sits on the magnetic stripe and is read at a terminal. CVV2 is printed and typed into a web form. iCVV is generated by the chip. The three values differ. A merchant that asks for CVV2 receives the printed value.

Why merchants do not store it

PCI DSS Requirement 3.2 forbids storage of sensitive authentication data after authorization. That set includes the full track, the PIN block, and the CVV. A compliant merchant keeps the CVV long enough to send the authorization request, then drops it. Storage of the code is a violation and a routine finding in breach investigations.

What a "high balance CVV" listing is

A listing that sells CVV data with a claimed balance is not a product category. The data comes from breaches, skimmers, or phishing. The seller does not hold the card. The buyer cannot check the balance claim before payment. Federal law treats the trade as access device fraud under 18 U.S.C. 1029. Penalties reach 10 years for a first offense and 15 years for a later one. Aggravated identity theft under 18 U.S.C. 1028A adds a mandatory 2-year term that runs after the fraud sentence.

Card shops have been seized. Joker's Stash closed in 2021. BriansClub was taken down in 2019 and again in 2024. Buyers lose funds to exit scams and to sellers who resell the same card number to several people.

How checks catch a stolen number

  • CVV check. The issuer compares the submitted code to its record. A wrong code declines the transaction.
  • AVS. The issuer compares the billing street number and ZIP to the address on file.
  • 3-D Secure. The issuer or the card network asks the cardholder to authenticate in an app or with a one-time code.
  • Velocity and device signals. Many cards from one device or one IP raise the risk score.

What protects a cardholder

Network tokenization replaces the card number with a token tied to one merchant and one device. The real number and the CVV never reach the merchant. Apple Pay and Google Pay use this. Virtual card numbers from issuers do the same job for subscriptions.

Turn on transaction alerts. Review statements each month. Report a lost card and request a new number; the CVV changes with the card. Freeze credit files at the three bureaus. File a report at IdentityTheft.gov if a card is opened in your name.

Card-not-present fraud totals are estimates. The FTC Consumer Sentinel and the FBI IC3 publish complaint counts, not audited loss figures.
